UNSW Bookshop

Kensington, NSW

The modernised UNSW Bookshop comprises three interconnected rooms of curated bookshelves, supported by a central multipurpose space for events, informal gathering, and study. The interior also integrates a café, along with built-in seating and lounges that encourage learning and social interaction.

Designed by SJB Architects, the exterior is defined by a curved mirror-finish stainless steel awning and a compact coffee servery with outdoor seating, establishing a distinct campus presence.

The lighting design was developed in close collaboration with the interior architect to ensure consistent illumination of book spines and display surfaces. A performance-led approach informed the use and integration of luminaires, reducing ceiling clutter while maintaining visual comfort and legibility. Subtle lighting interventions were also used to highlight key architectural elements and reinforce spatial clarity.

The result is a refined, functional scheme that supports the Bookshop’s role as a place of learning, exchange, and social connection.
