Vivid Unsui

Our team of in-house specialist lighting designers, electrical engineers and collaborating 3D artist, Roy Astin showcased our creativity at Vivid Sydney 2017 with our art exhibit – Unsui.

The practices of Zen Buddhism gave us the name of the installation, a term which translates as “cloud water”, but as used in ancient Zen poetry, it represents a meditative state: “to drift like clouds and flow like water”.

Unsui invited participants to suspend, for a moment, their habitual state of being, and allow themselves to be transported by a cloud-like mist to a place of tranquillity and stillness.

Visitors were able to experience a compelling sensory journey after entering the contained and curated atmosphere which initially presented as a simple domed structure. Within the walls, video projection, sound effects, an array of theatrical effects and luminaires created a landscape of light and sound, achieving true etherealness.

The atmosphere initially appeared dense and opaque; yet sometimes transparent and wispy; at other times, it captured the sense of brilliance that occurs when sunlight is filtered through a cloud.
